Through Hole Tapping : Its is recommended that a SPIRAL POINT OR GUN NOSE TAP with the plug chamber (2nd tap ) is most suitable for tapping in THROUGH HOLES especially in smaller diameters up to 10 mm.
Blind Hole Tapping The blind holes are classified into two varieties one which has less clearance at the bottom of the hole (less than 2 or 3 pitches) and the other having more clearance at the bottom. For soft materials, such as Aluminum Die cast or MS or soft brass/copper etc. SPIRAL FLUTED TAPS with 35 Degree Helix angle is recommended for best results. In Cast Iron and other hard/tough materials, which produce either powder or flake chips, it is recommended to use SHORT CHAMFER STRAIGHT FLUTED TAPS (Bottoming taps).Tapping to the bottom of the blind holes is slow and expensive because some chips get deposited at the bottom of the hole thereby interfering while tapping with the tap as it advances,and may chip off or break. So when the clearance at the bottom is very less and the tapping is required upto the bottom, the following suggestion may be followed:- A) Machine tap as far as possible using a straight flute or spiral flute tap. B) Finish the bottom thread by hand tapping using a bottoming tap.
Surface Coated Taps (PVD Coating Using Physical Vapour Deposition): By surface coating the taps can operate at much higher parameters, Surface coating also helps to improve chips flow smoothly. The following coatings are available :- A) Titanium Nitrate (TiN). B) Titanium Carbo Nitrate (TiCN). C) Multilayer Coating of TiN + TiCN (FUTURA) or NANO. Hi-Performance Taps (HSS + 5% Cobal) These taps are manufactured from HSS-E steel (5% Cobalt) and The advantages of these taps over conventional HSS (M2) taps are as follows. A) They can run at higher speeds and in some cases almost double than that of the conventional HSS taps. B) They last longer even at higher speeds. C) They are suitable for high Volume, high quality thread production. D) This would result in a considerable saving in tool changing time on CNC machines, thereby, increasing productivity. TAPPING SUGGESTIONS:- 1. Machines used for tapping a) To get most out of the tap, the spindle of the tapping machines and the tapping head should be free from runout and play. A simple check should ensure that the spindle is running true. b) It is common practice to use a FLOATING HOLDER, which allows the tap to align itself with the drilled hole. c) Never tap through a bushing because the crest of the tap might be damaged due to contact with the bushing. d) Countersinking the hole prior to tapping will facilitate easy entry of tap, especially in the case of bottoming tap. Countersinking is also helpful when tapping with a fluteless tap. e) Care should be taken while the tap reverses, because at many times problem occurs during tap reversal To some extent the problem can be sorted out by adjusting the feed control and speed while reversing. The tap should not come out with a jerk as this may damage the threads or may affect its finish. f) TORQUE FOR ROLL FORM TAPS:- The torque requirement for Fluteless taps are higher and in some cases double than those of cutting taps depending on the job material. Similarly for multispindle tapping, enough torque should be available on the machine.
2. Tests have shown that tapping torque increases when the minor diameter decreases. As the thread height increases, the width of the chip and the amount of material removed increases rapidly. On a basic thread from a 50% thread height represents the removal of only 31.3% of the basic area, while an increase to 75% thread height increases the area to be removed to 60.9% or practically double the first amount. With a tapped hole increased to the maximum pitch diameter, the figures increase to approximately 40% and 72% of the area.The second cause of increase in torque (except in the case of spiral point or spiral flute taps) is when a tap enters a drilled hole and starts cutting chips that will usually remain in the flutes as the tap advances. If stringy curly chips results, they roll over and over between the minor diameter of the hole and the bottom of the flutes, causing considerable friction. As the drilled hole becomes smaller, the amount of chips to be removed becomes so great that the friction generated may require as much power as actual cutting.In addition to causing friction , these curling chips score and tear the thread resulting in rough and oversize holes and lead to work rejection. This is especially true of the Unified Coarse Thread series in sizes ½” and smaller and the Metric Thread Sizes M12 and smaller.There are cases where a larger hole will save time and tool cost. Tests show that in general the bolt, or external threads, breaks at about 55% thread engagement, and there is very little increase in the strength of the nut when the thread height is increased.
3. DEPTH OF THREADING:- The normal recommended practice is twice the dia(2 D depth) and exceeding this limit may result in poor tap life or faster wear out.
4. WHILE TAPPING IN PUNCHED HOLES IN SHEET METALS:- It often causes bending or loading and the tap may break. When the hole is punched the metal is flaved out and this affect while the tap is reversed.
5. SPEED FOR TAPPING:- As a general rule, tapping speed is usually taken @50% to 65% of the drilling speed depending upon the depth of threading. However, hardness of the job, percentage of thread, cutting fluid etc. greatly influence tapping speed.
6.LUBRICANT FOR TAPPING:- Many tap users do not pay serious attention to the selection and use of proper lubricants or cutting fluids for succesful tapping practices. Many of tap users confuse with lubricants and with coolants Tapping always requires a proper lubricant and very rarely a coolant.
7. TAPPING HOLDERS:- Many tapping problems can be eliminated by going for good Reversible tapping attachment which should have features like torque control, self feed auto reverse, axial cushioning effect, Radial Float and should be light weight. Cutting Tools & Milling Cutter
